Effective immediately, hotels in Mexico will gradually introduce an "Eco-Tax."
Consequently, every guest of a hotel room in Mexico is required to pay a state levy locally at the hotel in cash, similar to a tourist tax.
**************************************
As of April 1, 2021, a tourism tax was put into effect and currently amounts to a one-time fee of 224 Mexican Pesos or approx. 11 US dollars per person, regardless of the planned duration of stay in the country.
The tax can be paid electronically before departure via the following link: http://www.visitax.gob.mx/sitio/
Alternatively, the tax can also be paid in cash upon entry at the airport. It is recommended to have the exact amount in Mexican Pesos or US dollars with you.
Sales tax applies at the hotel; this is paid at check-in.

Smoking ban

Smoking is prohibited in all public places in Mexico. This also applies to public transport, beaches, parks, hotels, and restaurants. Violations can be punished with fines or imprisonment.

Seasonal information

For stays between April and December, there may be an increased occurrence of seagrass and algae due to wind, temperature, and currents. In particular, a frequent increase in brown algae in the Caribbean can be observed during this time. This may affect the beach and the sea. The hotel management and local authorities are, of course, making every effort to clean affected beach sections in cooperation with local municipal authorities. However, this requires the use of appropriate machinery, which produces a slight level of background noise.
