CUMBRE VIEJA – TO THE TAJOGAITE VOLCANO (Wednesday/Saturday/Sunday)
Note: Half-day tour
The hike to the Tajogaite volcano on La Palma offers a rare opportunity to experience the youngest volcano in the Canary Islands up close. The eruption of Cumbre Vieja in 2021 profoundly changed the island and created a new landscape that is now safely accessible with specially trained guides.
The newly built path leads to the crater and continues to Las Manchas. Along the way, there are impressive views of the massive lava flows that once shaped the Aridane Valley and buried more than 1,600 buildings.
The hike not only offers intense natural experiences but also the history of La Palma's volcanoes. Besides Tajogaite, San Juan in 1949 and Teneguía in 1971 also shaped the face of Cumbre Vieja. The view into the crater and the encounter with this young, still smoking landscape make the tour an impressive testament to the power of nature and an unforgettable experience.

The summit hike from Pico de la Cruz to Roque de los Muchachos leads over La Palma's highest ridge and offers magnificent views of the steep crater walls of Caldera de Taburiente, the Atlantic Ocean, and, in clear weather, even the neighboring islands. The drive up via serpentine roads is impressive, as it passes through five different vegetation zones – from the fertile coastal strip through laurel and chestnut forests up to the barren subalpine landscape.
The crowning glory is Roque de los Muchachos, the highest point on La Palma at 2,426m. Here, an overwhelming 360-degree panoramic view makes this tour an unforgettable experience and a highlight of any hiking trip.
